The span design of steel structure is an important and complex task in construction engineering, which directly affects the safety, stability and economy of the building. The span of steel structure usually refers to the distance between two adjacent longitudinal positioning axes in the steel structure building, that is, the maximum size of the steel structure plant or building in the horizontal direction.
This size needs to be considered comprehensively according to multiple factors during design to ensure the rationality and safety of the structure. The purpose of the building will also affect the choice of span. Different uses may require different structural strength and stability. Industrial plants usually require a larger span to accommodate production equipment and operating space. In construction engineering, the span of steel structure plants generally follows the common practice of general building modulus, such as multiples of 6 meters (18 m, 24m, 30m, etc.). These design values help to achieve standardization and interchangeability of components, reduce manufacturing costs and improve construction efficiency. However, in special cases, if there is a special need, it can also be set to a non-modular size. Before this, structural design is required, including determining structural parameters such as span, column spacing, height, load, and performing necessary calculations and verifications.
Single span, double span and multi span steel structures are three different span types in steel structure buildings.
